Ah! what a lovely surprise to find the website of my old school...and my how it has grown. I attended the school during the time of Mrs Nicklin, my years being 1946-1949. The second world war had just finished and the country was still subject to food rationing..but I remember the relief of the 'grown ups' that at last it was all over. Eckington was a small quiet village in those days, with about 400 people.
I have remembered Mrs Nicklin with great affection all my life..she was a lovely and enthusiastic teacher and enabled many of us to pass the "dreaded" 11 plus exam.
I am very pleased that the school is thriving and seems to be in such good heart.
My kind regards to you all.
George Andrews.

I really enjoyed reading all about the school. My husband was born in Eckington in 1954 and went to the school. His mum and dad were Les and Dot Collins. We live in crewe now.

Ah, it doesn't seem long since I was pond monitor of the pond shown in the gallery... I left Eckington School in 1996, and Eckington in 2005, and having a mosey here from university... Looks great!

My family is descended, on my mothers side, from a family called Vernon. They lived in Eckington in the first half of the 19th century. One was the village blacksmith (James Vernon) and one was the miller (Thomas Vernon). Does anyone know anything about them? Whereabouts was the mill? Ibelieve there is still a Mill Lane, so that might be a clue.

Please e-mail me on gedixey@aol.com if you have any information.
Thank you

I have discovered that 3 generations of my mothers family lived in Eckington in the 19thC. Your vicar has kindly looked up some information for me at the Church, but has also advised me that no Vernons attended the school after it opened in 1867. My grandfather, born in 1848, would have been too old, but his younger siblings born as late as 1859 and 1861 could have attended but it would appear they did not.

my question is - was the school free for village children or was it only open to those who could afford to pay to send their children to it? or were only boys sent to school then as my great-grandfathers last 4 children were all girls?!

please e-mail any info to me on patriciaann@onetel.com

Thank you

Still checking what's going on at Eckington First School all the way from Australia. Looks like the building work is coming on well! We hope you put some new photos on soon.
Thinking of you all...

I must have been at the school when Mike was there. Miss Cunliffe, Mr Spode, Mr Haynes and others all saw me through from 1970 to 1976. I'm now a Head of Maths at a secondary school in New Zealand but visit the UK often and love to walk through Eckington on each trip. The journey from Boon Street to School Lane takes nowhere near as long as it used to!
